This comedy-drama features multiple gay characters, of all personalities. The live action Little Mermaid feels like the first time I’m seeing a young unambiguous black woman on screen in a romantic role. But the character we’re discussing is Calvin Owens, a gay student played by Paul James.
BET also continues to include gay and bi+ men on Tyler Perry’s Sistas and The Oval.

Showtime’s The Chi continues to grow the LGBTQ characters in its ensemble, and features the only trans woman on cable, Fatima. And this isn’t even an original movie, it’s an interpretation. Streaming was the only platform where Black LGBTQ representation decreased year over year.
I would love to see romantic movies with plots, character development, and arcs with black women in non-hyper sexual roles.
