In the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series the tale of Oma and Shu, an earthbending origin myth, becomes a queer love story. A variety of patterns concerning gender and sexuality exist across the world. The two women joined hands by the series' end and endeavored a journey into the Spirit World that stopped just short of the characters sharing a kiss, but for any fans left with lingering doubts, the Turf Wars comic made the budding romance explicit.

While many fixtures in the franchise have come a long way in presenting relationships that venture away from heteronormativity, the new novel breaks fresh ground by presenting Avatar 's first asexual character.

While the same-sex relationship that capped off the series stopped just short of its protagonist and Asami kissing, the comics and books that have expanded the world of Avatar ever since have done an admirable job showcasing the endless variety of realistic human relationships.

Yee sought to stray away from such focus on romantic subplots. While saying that he "decided not to feature romance in the book because [Yee] didn't think it would necessarily fit the kind of story the book would end up being," he did confirm that "Yangchen being asexual is an extremely valid and fitting interpretation.

Without any known romantic relationships and with much of her history a veritable blank slate for the novel to build on, the opportunity for such an important character to be a fixture of ace representation in the franchise seemed too tempting to turn away from.

Yet in so doing, Yee managed to present a character of an orientation too seldom explored in the realm of fiction: asexual people. Nobody fucking MOVE! K votes, comments. And while the character never expressly identifies as ace, at no point throughout the novel do romantic or sexual relationships entertain the focus of her narrative.

All nations have a traditional idea of gender roles. A Nickelodeon original show, the 61 episode series follows a world in turmoil and nations divided. The Dawn of Yangchen admirably continues that trend in a new direction. No I’m not (and never) talking about James Cameron’s CGI blue people, but the series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Asexual and aromantic relationships remain too often ignored in modern media. Women have faced discrimination. The creative freedom of the Avatar franchise proved relatively limited in its earliest days, with executive mandates regarding censorship infamously stifling just how explicit Korra and Asami's romantic relationship could be in The Legend of Korra.

With more novels yet to come from Yee -- and Avatar Studios already working on films with the opportunity to bring those relationships back to the world of animation -- there will doubtless be plenty of opportunities for Avatar to expand on the diversity and variety of human life it so often celebrates as integral to its themes of balance and harmony.

Something new and gay has hit the Avatar universe. That same trend continued in the first Avatar novels, where Kyoshi's life as a teenager showed the earlier Avatar's relationship with Rangi creating one of the franchise's most beautiful romances.
